Custom Glass Neon Signs — Hand-Bent in Our Studio
A custom glass neon sign is a made-to-order illuminated sign crafted from real glass tubing, shaped by hand and filled with neon or argon gas. Each piece is produced individually by a trained artisan in the Echo Neon studio. Use the form at the top of the page to request a custom quote, or upload your logo or artwork for a free mock-up. Before you place an order, this guide explains what makes traditional glass neon authentic, how your sign is produced, which elements you can customise, when glass is a better choice than LED and the practical trade-offs involved.

What You Can Customize
You can choose the wording or logo, font, colour, dimensions, installation format and brightness. Glass has tighter production limits than LED neon, so our team will confirm what is practical during the proof stage.
Text or logo
Enter your wording into the custom neon sign generator, or upload a logo, illustration or other graphic design. Our team will review the artwork and send a free mock-up within 24 hours. Glass is best suited to clean designs with continuous lines. Detailed logos may need to be simplified or divided into several tube sections. Any necessary adjustments will be discussed before you approve the final design.
Font
Choose from our available font styles. Flowing scripts and connected lettering work especially well with glass because their shapes follow the natural movement of the tubing. Block fonts can also be produced, although they may require more separate sections and welded joins.
Colour
Glass neon colours are created through a combination of gas, phosphor coatings and coloured glass. The available range is smaller than the colour range offered with LED neon, but the glow is warmer, deeper and difficult to reproduce with LEDs.
Size
Select dimensions that suit the wall, bar, shopfront or venue where the sign will be displayed. Glass tubing has practical size limits, particularly when mounted on a single backboard. Larger signs may be divided across several panels or glass sections that are installed side by side. The customiser or our design team will confirm what can be safely produced and transported.
Installation Style
A. Direct-to-wall. The glass tubing arrives in several sections that are mounted directly onto the wall without an acrylic backboard. This creates the cleanest and most traditional vintage neon appearance.
B. Pre-mounted. The sign arrives attached to a clear acrylic backboard with pre-drilled mounting holes. It is easier to install and can usually be hung soon after delivery.
Direct-to-wall installation offers the most authentic finish, while a pre-mounted sign is the more convenient option.
Dimmer
A dimmer is included so you can adjust the brightness for the room. Glass neon provides a steady, continuous glow and does not offer the flashing, colour-changing or animated effects available with some LED neon signs.

How We Make Your Glass Neon Sign
Each sign moves through six production stages before it is packed for delivery.

Design
Your design is reproduced at full size on a heat-resistant pattern for the artisan to follow. For text-based signs, the form above helps create the initial layout. For logos and original artwork, upload your file and our design team will prepare a proof within 24 hours.

Heat and Bend
Sections of glass tubing are heated over a ribbon burner at approximately 650°C until pliable. The artisan shapes each section against the full-size pattern while gently blowing air through the tube to maintain its diameter. Every bend is formed and judged by hand before the glass cools.

Weld and Add Electrodes
Where several sections are required, the ends of the tubes are heated and fused together. Electrodes are then attached to conduct the current that activates the gas inside the sign.

Bombard
The sealed tube is connected to a vacuum system and exposed to a high-current charge. This bombarding process removes moisture, gases and impurities, helping the finished sign produce a bright and even glow.

Fill and Seal
The tube is filled with the gas required for the selected colour. Neon produces red and orange tones, while argon, phosphor coatings and coloured glass provide blues and a broader colour range. Some traditional glass neon colours may use a small sealed quantity of mercury. The completed tube is then permanently sealed.

Test, Mount and Pack
The finished sign is connected to its transformer and tested for colour, brightness and electrical stability. It is then mounted to the selected backboard or prepared for direct-to-wall installation before being packed in a protective custom case.
Standard production takes approximately 6 to 8 business days. Free standard worldwide delivery usually takes a further 4 to 6 working days.
What Makes a Glass Neon Sign Authentic?
A vintage glass neon sign is defined by its materials and craftsmanship, not simply by a retro-looking design. Three qualities distinguish real glass neon from an LED sign made to imitate its appearance.
The first is the tubing. Real glass tubes, typically 8 to 10 mm in diameter, are heated over an open flame and hand-shaped against a full-size pattern, making every sign unique.
The second is the gas inside the tube. Neon gas creates the familiar red and orange glow. Argon, often used with a phosphor coating inside the glass, produces blues and a wider range of colours. When an electrical current passes through the tube, the gas becomes ionised and emits light in every direction.
This creates the distinctive 360-degree glow that gives traditional glass neon its depth and sculptural quality. LED neon, by comparison, primarily emits light from the front surface of its silicone tubing.
The third is the craft itself. Glass tube bending is a specialist trade requiring years of training. It continues a tradition that has illuminated restaurants, theatres, hotels, bars and shopfronts since the early twentieth century, and helps explain why real glass neon costs more.
When to Choose Glass Neon Instead of LED Neon
Echo Neon produces both traditional glass neon signs and custom LED neon signs. Neither material is automatically better in every setting.
Glass offers greater authenticity, a deeper glow and a stronger sense of craftsmanship. LED is generally more affordable, lighter, more energy-efficient and more flexible for detailed designs.
| Consideration | Traditional Glass Neon | LED Neon |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Real hand-bent glass tubes filled with neon or argon gas | LED lighting inside flexible silicone tubing mounted on acrylic |
| Production | Shaped individually by trained glass artisans | Produced through CNC cutting and hand assembly |
| Glow | 360-degree illumination with deep colour and natural variation | Bright, uniform light directed mainly from the front |
| Lifespan | Commonly 8 to 15 years, and potentially longer with care | Up to approximately 50,000 hours |
| Price | Higher due to specialist labour, glass, gas and transformers | Generally more affordable |
| Voltage | Approximately 3,000 to 18,000V; transformer required | Usually 12V or 24V and plug-and-play |
| Weight and handling | Relatively light but fragile during transport and installation | Lightweight and easier to deliver, move and hang |
| Sound | May produce a faint ambient hum | Silent |
| Heat | Glass tubes become warm during operation | Generally cool to the touch |
| Indoor/Outdoor | Indoor use only at Echo Neon | Indoor use; sheltered outdoor use with splash-proof treatment |
| Color Range | Fewer colours with a rich, saturated glow | 18 colours, including switchable and dynamic RGB options |
| Best suited to | Home bars, restaurants, retro interiors, heritage shopfronts and art installations | Bedrooms, children’s rooms, weddings, events, businesses and gifts |
Choose glass for an authentic, handcrafted feature in an indoor adult space. Choose LED when lower voltage, lighter weight, detailed artwork, outdoor suitability or a lower price is more important.
What Glass Neon Signs Are Used For
Traditional glass neon works particularly well in adult-oriented spaces with vintage, industrial or heritage-inspired interiors.

Home Bars and Games Rooms
A surname, signature drink, “Cocktails” sign or personal phrase can create a permanent focal point behind a home bar or games area.

Restaurants, Cafés and Cocktail Bars
Glass neon suits cocktail bars, jazz venues, retro diners, hotel lounges and other hospitality spaces that benefit from its deep, traditional glow.

Tattoo Studios, Barbershops and Heritage Businesses
Tattoo studios, barbershops and independent retailers can use handmade glass neon for logos, business names and window displays.

Artworks and Gallery Installations
Artists, collectors and property owners commission custom glass neon for gallery features, private collections and statement wall art.

Premium Weddings and Events
For a vintage venue or carefully styled event, glass neon provides an authentic feature that can later be displayed at home. Its fragility makes it less suitable for signs that need to be transported frequently.

Shopfront and Brand Signage
Independent retailers, restaurants and hospitality businesses can use real glass neon to reinforce a heritage or premium brand identity. Covered, weather-protected commercial installations may be possible for specially designed projects. For any location exposed to rain, humidity or outdoor conditions, LED neon with splash-proof treatment is the more suitable choice.
What to Expect: The Practical Trade-Offs
A real glass neon sign differs significantly from an LED sign.
- It is fragile. Glass tubing can break if dropped, struck or handled roughly, so it must be treated as a glass product during installation and use.
- It operates at high voltage. The enclosed transformer supplies the voltage needed to illuminate the gas. Glass neon is not recommended for nurseries, children’s rooms or locations where the tubes are easily reached.
- It is designed for indoor use. For outdoor, damp or humid areas, choose LED neon with splash-proof treatment.
- It takes longer to make. Each glass section is formed by hand, with standard production taking 6 to 8 working days.
- It costs more than LED neon. The price reflects the specialist labour, glass tubing, gas, electrodes and transformer required.
Glass is the right choice when authentic materials and craftsmanship outweigh the higher cost, fragility and installation restrictions.
Installation and Care
Every Echo Neon glass neon sign arrives pre-wired with a transformer and a power lead suitable for connection to a standard UK wall socket. An electrician is not normally required.
Installation usually takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the selected mounting style.

Pre-Mounted Acrylic Backboard:
- Hangs in a similar way to a framed artwork
- Includes pre-drilled mounting holes and screws
- Mount the backboard, connect the power and switch the sign on
- Typical installation time: 15 to 20 minutes

Direct-to-Wall Installation:
- Supplied in several sections for assembly on the wall
- Includes a full-size layout template, mounting hardware and instructions
- Typical installation time: 30 to 45 minutes
- Creates the cleanest and most traditional glass neon appearance

Care Instructions:
- Switch off and unplug the sign before cleaning
- Remove dust using a soft, dry cloth
- Do not use liquid cleaners on the glass tubes
- Avoid knocking or placing pressure on the tubing
- Keep the sign away from moisture and humid conditions
- The transformer may require replacement after approximately 5 to 10 years of regular use; replacement units are available from Echo Neon
Frequently Asked Questions
Production normally takes 6 to 8 working days after the design is approved. Free standard worldwide delivery usually takes another 4 to 6 working days.
The total timeframe is generally around 10 to 14 working days from approval to delivery. Expedited delivery options may be available at checkout.
Yes, when properly installed and handled. The enclosed transformer converts household electricity to the high voltage required to illuminate the gas, and the sign connects to a wall socket like another electrical appliance.
However, we do not recommend glass neon for nurseries, children’s rooms or locations where young children can reach the tubing. LED neon is the safer choice for these spaces.
A faint ambient hum can be normal. The high-voltage transformer may produce a slight sound that is noticeable when standing close to the sign in a quiet room.
Many owners consider this part of the character of traditional neon. Choose LED neon when silent operation is important.
A professionally made glass neon sign can last approximately 8 to 15 years with normal use and proper care. In some cases, the glass tubes can continue operating for considerably longer.
The transformer may need to be replaced after around 5 to 10 years, depending on how frequently the sign is used.
Echo Neon glass neon signs are rated for indoor use only. For covered but humid areas, exposed outdoor spaces or locations where moisture is present, choose an LED neon sign with splash-proof treatment.
Each glass tube is shaped by hand over an open flame by an artisan with specialist training. Glass neon also requires electrodes, gas, a transformer and several technical processes that are not required for flexible LED tubing.
The higher price reflects the materials, production time and skilled labour involved.
